Samuel Langhorne Clemens (30 November 1835 to 21 April 1910) adopted the pen name Mark Twain for his writing. He has the distinction of being born and dying when Halley’s Comet was in the sky.
He started his working life as a printer, a brief time as a riverboat pilot, and then became a journalist and author. His pen name comes from the measure of depth (mark twain) in the Mississippi River that is safe for a steamboat to pass over.
Mark Twain is known for his books like Tom Sawyer, and many call him the father of American literature. He made and lost a fortune and then went out and made another fortune through his writing and speaking tours.
Mark Twain promoted many modern attitudes like the need to like yourself. It is a simple idea – if you don’t love yourself, how will anyone else? Then there is the need to live your life without false limits – age is a number, and your gender is a biological fact.
Neither of these facts puts restrictions on your ability to achieve any goal unless you choose to think of them as barriers to success. He approached life with gentle humor and was understanding of other people’s habits and beliefs.
From Mark Twain’s life and works, we can learn to treat others with kindness, see the funny side of our problems and understand that we need to work to achieve our goals instead of dreaming about them.
