“‘Tis the season to be jolly!” Yes, it’s that time of the year once again, a time for peace and goodwill to all men, sharing, love, and merrymaking!
Christmas to some people is the time for a pause. Keep your mind off the troubles and mundane attributes of life and get out of the “hustle and bustle” of everyday existence. To others, it is the opposite, being the rush of several social functions, family gatherings, Christmas parties, and frantic last-minute gift purchasing.
To some, it is the time to reacquaint oneself with the true meaning of the season: the celebration of Christ’s coming to the world to fulfill God’s promise of reconciliation with man. As such, it is the time when people seem to be kind and accommodating to others. It is a time for old friends to rekindle long-lost ties, to forgive petty infractions, and to reunite families torn asunder by misunderstandings.
Christmas is when surroundings are magically transformed into beautiful tinsel towns, adorned with glittering festive decors and bright shining lights. In some areas, the White Christmas theme is brought accurately to life, while in warmer climes, artificial snow is introduced to achieve the same effect. It’s the time to choose the best-looking pine trees and decorate them with colorful lights and ornaments fitting their purpose of guarding over many coveted treasures.
History Of Christmas
Christmas is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, observed primarily on December 25 as a religious and cultural celebration among billions of people around the world. A feast central to the Christian liturgical year, it is preceded by the season of Advent or the Nativity Fast and initiates the season of Christmastide, which historically in the West lasts twelve days and culminates on the Twelfth Night; in some traditions, Christmastide includes an octave.
Christmas Day is a public holiday in many of the world‘s nations, is celebrated religiously by a majority of Christians, as well as culturally by many non–Christians, and forms an integral part of the holiday season centered around it. The traditional Christmas narrative, the Nativity of Jesus, delineated in the New Testament says that Jesus was born in Bethlehem, in accordance with messianic prophecies.
When Joseph and Mary arrived in the city, the inn had no room and so they were offered a stable where the Christ Child was soon born, with angels proclaiming this news to shepherds who then further disseminated the information. The earliest known Christmas celebration was in Rome in 336. Christmas played a role in the Arian controversy of the fourth century. The feast was introduced at Constantinople in 379, and at Antioch in about 380, and by the end of the fifth century, it was widely celebrated in the East. By the end of the eighth century, the celebration of Christmas had spread all the way to Scandinavia.
Modern Christmas Traditions
The modern Christmas traditions, such as the Christmas tree, the Christmas wreath, the Yule log, the giving of gifts, and the arrival of Santa Claus, all have their roots in pre–Christian winter festivals. The celebratory customs associated in various countries with Christmas have a mix of pre–Christian, Christian, and secular themes and origins.
Popular modern customs of the holiday include gift giving, completing an Advent calendar or Advent wreath, Christmas music and caroling, lighting a Christingle, viewing a Nativity play, an exchange of Christmas cards, church services, a special meal, and the display of various Christmas decorations, including Christmas trees, Christmas lights, nativity scenes, garlands, wreaths, mistletoe, and holly.
In addition, several closely related and often interchangeable figures, known as Santa Claus, Father Christmas, Saint Nicholas, and Christkind, are associated with bringing gifts to children during the Christmas season and have their own body of traditions and lore.
The True Meaning Of Christmas
The true meaning of Christmas is to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and to recognize the importance of his teachings in our lives. It is a time to come together with family and friends to share love, joy, and peace. It is also a time to reflect on the blessings we have received throughout the year and to give thanks for them.

Once again we find ourselves enmeshed in the Holiday Season, that very special time of year when we join with our loved ones in sharing centuries-old traditions such as trying to find a parking space at the mall. Christmas Celebrations
Christmas would not be complete without the season’s carols and songs. Be it the traditional classics or the more modern tunes. The first few bars fill your ears and hearts with angelic melodies that warm your whole being. You can hear them being sung by carolers braving the cold and busy streets to give joy to people, and hopefully get some modest remuneration in return. They can also be heard in churches, via the marvelous pipe organs or by simple choirs and instruments.
Christmas is also the chance to eat those sumptuous feasts of Christmas turkey, ham, roast beef, mashed potatoes, fruitcakes, eggnogs, apple or pumpkin pies, chestnuts roasting, and a heavenly selection of other foods. But of course, it is not just the food that’s important during the season but the spirit of sharing and togetherness that is paramount.
Many people say that Christmas is for only kids. While that may be true and could be attributed to many adults’ preoccupation in our hectic, fast-paced society, deep inside, we are all children. We all long for that enchanting moment when we try to get a glimpse of Santa Claus climbing down the chimney, putting gifts under the tree, or placing them in hung stockings.
We all still want to see the reindeer pull the magical sleigh full of wondrous gifts wrought by good ole Saint Nick himself while being assisted by his elves. Whatever meaning Christmas has to us, it truly is the most beautiful part of everyone’s lives in the US, and also throughout the world.
